Artist's Statement
Each artist is not a special kind of person but each person is a special kind of artist.
This statement exemplifies my life as an artist and art educator. Art, for me, is my ongoing attempt to engage others in the work that I create. If I can leave the viewer wondering about the many possibilities of the work, I believe I have been successful. My work is not my attempt to show or to lecture on what is, but to nudge, suggest, and to stimulate a response from the inner life of the viewer. When viewers look at my work, I would like them to become fully engaged, and to be more cognizant of their own ideas and feelings about my creations. In the end, my work is a stimulus for self-reflection and awareness, for the discovery of our own unique qualities as thinking and feeling human beings.

I am a native Texan, a retired educator of forty years, and the recipient of Teacher of the Year for Irving HS and the Irving ISD; Texas State Teacher of the Year for Administrators of Special Education; and the Robert Rauschenberg Award for Teaching (2002) presented at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
My art-making career began at a very early age. I was a weaver after receiving a Master’s degree from the Rhode Island School of Design and discovered quilt making in 1989. Since then, I have exhibited my award-winning quilts and garments worldwide. My work is included in several corporate and private collections in the US, Europe, and the Middle East.
I have been working with silk organza and one-eighth inch French seams for the past ten years. The silk is hand dyed, de-gummed, stamped, and screen-printed. The seams create patterns of lines and geometric shapes. With three layers of the silk organza, embroidered and machine quilted create a Transparent Quilt. The Yellow Dragonflies is the first of a series of the Transparent Quilts.
