Calligraphy & watercolor
Margaret Darphin Mall
Always having a bent toward creativity, in the 80s Margaret designed and needlepointed her designs which earned her awards at the State Fair of Texas several years running. During that time, Margaret studied calligraphy, and in 2002, began offering calligraphic services through her company, Calligraphy Art Studio. Her offerings included (and still does) personalized note cards, resolutions honoring retirees, excellent service, so forth, as well as marriage certificates, including Ketubah texts (Jewish marriage contracts), addressing wedding envelopes, place cards, menus, anniversary items, and much more. She also paints movements of letters in abstract works and hand letters quotes, individualized prayers and quotes, and wedding initials using gouache watercolors, dry pigments, various inks, and other forms of media.
Margaret first studied calligraphy in the early ’80s. In 2002, having studied more calligraphy under Susie-Melissa Cherry, Margaret opened Calligraphy Art Studio and began offering her calligraphic services.
Margaret creates and sells personalized note and blank note cards, holiday, birthday, thank you, and other occasion cards for purchase. She accepts commissions for calligraphed resolutions honoring a person’s excellent service upon retirement. As a calligrapher, Margaret provides hand-lettered envelope addressing for weddings, holidays, business functions, as well as marriage certificates, such as Ketubah texts (Jewish marriage contracts), and event place cards.
For her watercolor art, Margaret uses mostly gouache watercolors, dry pigments, FineTech and Winsor & Newton watercolors, various Japanese inks and other mediums showing movements of letters in abstract works. Most all of Margaret’s hand lettered quotes, prayers and Bible verses, and wedding initials are all created using gouache watercolors, dry pigments, various inks, and other forms of media.
An artist at heart, but somewhat of a “late bloomer,” Margaret continues developing her water coloring talents combining the art with calligraphy. In 2019, she created a large multi-media (watercolor and acrylic) painting on a gallery wrapped, 48″ x 24″ canvas.
In 2007, Margaret studied under Reggie Ezell, Master Scribe from Chicago, IL. Over the years Margaret has studied under other nationally recognized US calligraphers and artists Barbara Close, Pamela Paulsrud, Rosie Kelly, Sherri Lovler, Madeline Durham, Santa Fe, NM, and Yves Leterme, from Belgium. Local artist Linda Ortman is Margaret’s art mentor.
Currently, Exhibit Chairperson, for Kaligrafos, Margaret has exhibited her calligraphic art at the Courtyard Gallery, Plano, TX; Goodrich Gallery, First United Methodist Church, Dallas; ArtReach Gallery, Lovers Lane United Methodist Church, Dallas, TX; Irving Arts Center and Jaycee Park Gallery, Irving, TX, as well as the former Artists Showplace, Dallas, TX and Frisco Fine Arts Gallery, Frisco, TX.
