Painting: pastel, acrylic, and oil

KAREN VANDERPOOL-HAERLE

“I am predominantly an observational painter but I observe in order to change it, to create an emotional response to the landscape – to paint more than I see, to paint the wind and the sun and the changing light. Every environment is a new experience. Sometimes it’s about color or light and sometimes it’s about drawing, marking and scraping back into the paint to create a dialogue with the canvas, creating layers of paint or pastel that interact with one another and create something new.” — Vanderpool-Haerle

Karen is currently exploring the rejuvenation of the Blackland prairies and the broader natural landscape—how the land feels with the wind and the movement of grasses, trees, clouds, and pollinators. Her work examines how these elements coexist, change, adapt, and ultimately maintain balance within the universe.

Her sculpture similarly draws on themes of nature, reflecting her observations while exploring the natural world.

She also paints and sculpts in virtual reality, investigating parallel ideas of environment and rewilding. She is currently working to bring her physical and virtual works together within mixed reality—a space where the real and virtual worlds meet to create a new form of artistic expression.
